Remer Brinson III has been named president of State Bank and Trust Co., responsible for all commercial and retail banking functions in Atlanta, Middle Georgia and Augusta.

Brinson was president, CEO and director of Augusta-based Georgia-Carolina Bancshares Inc. and its subsidiary, First Bank of Georgia, which was acquired in January by State Bank Financial Corp., the holding company for State Bank.

He joined First Bank of Georgia as president in 1999.

Mercer on best colleges list

for 13th year

Mercer University appears in The Princeton Review’s annual best colleges guide for the 13th consecutive year. Only about 15 percent of America’s 2,500 four-year colleges and only four colleges outside the U.S. are profiled in this year’s guide, “The Best 380 Colleges.”

The guide, which has been printed annually since 1992, is based on surveys of 136,000 students about their school’s academics, administration, student body and themselves.

Geico announces promotions

Eugene Newell has been promoted to a Geico centralized service imaging supervisor. Newell began his career in 2013 as a sales representative.

Janola Wood has been selected as a Geico Macon report center performance coach. Wood began her career in the management development program in 2012.

President/CEO of Wesley Glen Ministries to retire

After 12 years of leadership and service, William Oliver, president and CEO of Wesley Glen Ministries, announced his retirement. In 2003, Oliver was nominated by Bishop Michael Watson of the South Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church to his position. During his leadership at Wesley Glen the ministry has experienced exponential growth.

Copelan is newest attorney of counsel

The partners at Spivey, Pope, Green and Greer announced its newest attorney of counsel, Dean Copelan, who practices in the areas of wealth management and probate and estate administration. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and joins us from Bank of America, where he served as assistant general counsel.

Hetzler opens office at Coliseum

Norman “Chip” Hetzler Jr. has opened Coliseum Heart, Lung & Vascular Associates at Coliseum Medical Centers.

Hetzler is a board-certified cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, specializing in mitral valve and aortic valve repair and replacement, VATS, endovascular and open procedures and the treatment of complex coronary artery disease including re-do surgery. He earned his medical degree at Hahnemann Medical College.

Macon-Bibb CVB promotes coordinator, hires manager

The Macon-Bibb County Convention & Visitors Bureau has promoted Veronica Gruber, former convention sales coordinator, to group tour sales manager.

Jennifer Thomas joins the marketing team as marketing manager.

Gruber has worked in the hospitality industry for seven years. Her previous positions include event and human resources manager for Hot Plates Group and park director intern at the International Cherry Blossom Festival, both in Macon.

Thomas is a graduate of Central High School. She previously worked for Verizon Wireless for 18 years, where she held positions on the training, national retail advertising, retail sales operations and retail sales teams.
