The Little Richard House Resource Center
Overview
Visit the childhood home of Little Richard! Little Richard Penniman was born in Macon's Pleasant Hill neighborhood, a historic Black community that was developed in the 1870s through the 1930s. Family, work, church, community and music were vital institutions to the neighborhood's residents. Richard grew up there as the third child of 12 born to Charles and Leva Mae Penniman. It was there that he first began singing in church and taking piano lessons. Richard had long left Macon when Interstate 75 ripped through and divided Pleasant Hill in the 1970s. His modest family home had become dilapidated and was in danger of being torn down when members of the Macon community united to move it to its current location in Pleasant Hill, renovate it and preserve it. Today, the Little Richard House represents the greatness of its namesake and of the Pleasant Hill neighborhood where it stands. Visitors and students can learn about Little Richard's life and the history of Pleasant Hill. The House presents tours, exhibits, community gatherings, educational programming and each April, the annual Little Richard Festival.
