Macon is home to a wide variety of museums highlighting art, culture heritage, history, music, and sports. Check out any of these museums for an interactive, educational and entertaining experience. These facilities are all available for private rental (except for the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park) and would make a unique backdrop for your next event, party, corporate function or special occasion.

Tubman Museum

The Tubman Museum is the largest museum in the Southeast that is dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of African American art, culture, and history. In 2015, the Tubman moved into its new 49,000 square foot facilities which are an amazing backdrop to display their works of art and educate all who enter this facility.

Museum of Arts and Sciences

The Museum of Arts and Sciences is home to an impressive collection of art, science, nature and animal exhibits. Be sure to check out the Mark Smith Planetarium which is one of three planetariums in the U.S. to project the night skies with a state of the art projector, the Konica Minolta Super MediaGlobe-II. There is always something fun and educational happening at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, so make sure to check out their schedule of events. Highlights include the Festival of Trees, Polar Bear Den, and Sky Over Macon.


The Allman Brother Band Museum at the Big House

The Big House was the home of Southern Rock pioneers, the Allman Brothers Band from December 1969-January 1973. Today it is a showcase of the band’s archives and memorabilia, with an upstairs that has been restored back to its original state when the band and their families lived in the house. Musical concerts are hosted at the Big House throughout the year, so check their website come tour the Big House and enjoy live music in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame recognizes the great athletic achievements that Georgians have made throughout the years. Each year, new inductees are inducted into the Hall of Fame and now over 300 Georgia Athletes have been recognized for their sporting accomplishments. The museum is 43,000 square feet which makes it the largest state sports museum in the U.S.

 

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

The Monument is part of the National Park Service. At Ocmulgee, they have an indoor museum that contains over 2,000 artifacts on display dating from 10,000 B.C.E-1800's. Make sure to watch the 17 minute film that tells the history of 17,000 years of uninterrupted human occupancy at this site. See the great temple mound and explore North America's only reconstructed earthlodge.

 

Hay House

The Hay House is a 18,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival style mansion built from 1854 to 1859. This National Historic Landmark has been featured on A&E's "America's Castles" and CSPAN's "Cities Tour". The home is seven levels with a 80-foot cupola, breathtaking fine arts room and 15-room speaker tube system which combine to make this a must see attraction.

Cannonball House

The Cannonball House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1853. This was the only structure in Macon struck by a cannonball during the Civil War in 1864. Listed on the National Register of Historic Homes, the house features a Civil War museum as well as furnishings from the Wesleyan College meeting rooms of Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Mu sororities.

Otis Redding Foundation and Otis Redding Mini-Museum

The mini-museum is where you can stop and learn about the King of Soul, Otis Redding. View exhibits and displays provided by the Redding family and soak up musical history.
